The Scubapro MK25 EVO / S620Ti combination is widely considered the gold standard in scuba regulators for good reason. Setting the Standard

If you ask any group of experienced divers what the best regulator on the market is, the Scubapro MK25 EVO / S620Ti combination will be one of the top answers every single time. After 80+ dives across an absurd range of conditions - from 4 degree Celsius drysuit diving in a Norwegian fjord to 30 degree Celsius reef diving in Raja Ampat - I can confirm: the hype is justified. This is the regulator I measure everything else against.

First Stage - The MK25 EVO

The MK25 EVO is a balanced diaphragm first stage, which means it uses a spring-loaded diaphragm to maintain consistent intermediate pressure regardless of tank pressure, depth, or breathing rate. The EVO version adds an extended thermal insulating kit that protects the first stage from ice formation in cold water. This is not marketing - there is an actual mechanical difference in the cold water performance.

In Norway, diving in 4 degree Celsius water, I had zero free-flow issues during predive checks or throughout the dive. My dive buddy with an older unsealed regulator had to disconnect his first stage and warm it under his drysuit before every dive. That alone justifies the premium price for anyone who dives cold water.

The S620Ti uses a downstream lever design with Scubapro patented Venturi-Initiated Vacuum Assist (VIVA). When the diver inhales, the venturi effect pulls the diaphragm open further, creating a self-sustaining airflow that reduces breathing effort. The result is breathing that feels almost effortless, like the regulator is reading your mind and delivering exactly the air you need before you even ask for it.

The inhalation resistance is adjustable via a knob on the front of the second stage. The full range covers everything from a very light breathing effort (ideal for deep or strenuous diving) to a slightly heavier setting that prevents free-flow on the surface. The diver-operated pre-dive switch (DIVE/PRE-DIVE) controls the venturi assist to prevent free-flow on the surface while delivering maximum performance at depth.

Real-World Breathing Performance

On a deep wall dive in Raja Ampat at 30+ meters, after swimming against current to reach the cleaning station, I was breathing hard - the kind of breathing where you notice every bit of resistance in your regulator. The MK25 EVO / S620Ti delivered smooth, effortless airflow even at peak demand. No stiffness, no resistance, no condensation. Just clean air flowing exactly as needed.

Service and Cost

The MK25 EVO / S620Ti requires annual service like any high-end regulator. Service parts are readily available at any Scubapro authorized dealer. The cost of ownership is higher than mid-range regulators, but the performance and longevity are also higher. A well-maintained MK25 EVO will easily last 20+ years. Many dive shops use these as rental regulators for a reason.

Is it overkill for recreational diving? Probably. A mid-range regulator like the Scubapro MK2 EVO / R195 combination breathes almost as well at a fraction of the cost. But if you are a serious diver who wants the best, who dives in cold water, or who is building a tech diving kit, the MK25 EVO / S620Ti is the benchmark for a reason. Buy once, cry once.
